Texas Lions District 2-E2 Leader Dogs for the Blind Empowering Independence. Changing Lives.

Leader Dogs for the Blind

Leader Dogs for the Blind has been providing life-changing services since 1939, offering guide dogs, orientation and mobility training, and other resources — free of charge — to people who are blind or visually impaired. The organization’s mission is simple yet powerful: empowering people who are blind or visually impaired with lifelong skills for independent travel.

Through this mission, Leader Dogs for the Blind transforms lives by helping individuals reclaim their independence and confidence.

The Lions Connection

Lions have been at the heart of Leader Dogs for the Blind since its founding. In fact, the organization was started by three Detroit-area Lions Club members who saw a need and chose to take action. That spirit of service continues today, with Lions Clubs across the United States and beyond playing a critical role in raising awareness, supporting fundraising efforts, and fostering community connections.

Here in Lions District 2-E2, we proudly support Leader Dogs for the Blind through:

  • Fundraising events and donations to help cover the cost of training dogs and clients.
  • Club presentations and educational programs to raise awareness about the services Leader Dog offers.
  • Community outreach to connect individuals in need with Leader Dog’s free programs.
  • Support for Puppy Raisers and Foster programs that raise future Leader Dogs.

What Does Leader Dog Provide?

All services from Leader Dogs for the Blind are provided completely free of charge, including:

  • Guide Dog Training
  • Orientation & Mobility (White Cane) Training
  • Guide Dog Training for Teens
  • Virtual Learning Resources

These programs are designed to meet people wherever they are in their journey — whether they’re new to vision loss or ready to travel with a guide dog for the first time.

How You Can Help

As a Lion, you can help in many ways:

  • Invite a Leader Dog speaker to your club meeting.
  • Sponsor a guide dog through club fundraising efforts.
  • Promote Leader Dog programs in your community.
  • Encourage puppy raising within your club or family.

Whether through service, support, or spreading the word, every action makes a difference. Together, we help give the gift of independence to people who need it most.
